Full List of KDF Ranks and the Salaries They Earn per Month

A breakdown of salaries in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has exposed a wide pay gap between entry-level recruits and the senior commanders who sit at the top of the military hierarchy.

Established under Article 241 of the 2010 Constitution and governed by the Kenya Defence Forces Act of 2012, the KDF comprises the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy. The president serves as commander-in-chief of all three services.

In the Kenya Army, cadets undergoing training receive KSh 7,172 per month, the lowest pay on the scale. Privates earn between KSh 19,941 and KSh 30,000, while lance corporals take home KSh 26,509 to KSh 50,000. Corporals earn between KSh 32,250 and KSh 70,000.

Commissioned officers are paid considerably more. Captains earn KSh 73,182 to KSh 110,000, and majors receive between KSh 102,106 and KSh 150,000. Lieutenant colonels and colonels earn KSh 130,735 to KSh 180,000, while brigadiers take home KSh 153,317 to KSh 300,000.

The pay climbs sharply at the top. Lieutenant generals earn between KSh 632,984 and KSh 800,000, while a full general, the highest-ranking army officer, receives KSh 894,897 to KSh 1.2 million monthly, plus KSh 336,000 in allowances.

The Kenya Air Force follows a similar structure, with leading aircraftmen earning KSh 19,941 and corporals KSh 32,250. An air commodore draws KSh 906,014, while the most senior officer, an air vice marshal, has a basic salary of KSh 695,625 plus KSh 278,250 in allowances.

In the Kenya Navy, junior seamen start at KSh 19,941 a month, and a commander earns KSh 130,735. A commodore receives KSh 906,014, while an admiral gets the same basic salary and allowances as an air vice marshal.

The KDF says aspiring soldiers can join through structured recruitment programmes and rise through the ranks on merit, with pay and privileges meant to reward service, discipline and dedication.
