In an effort to ensure that the use of smart glasses become widely accepted, AutoVision Initiative has given out free smart glasses at the Benin Golf Club, Edo State.

The Executive Director of AutoVision Initiative, Desmond Bassey, who stated this on Tuesday in Benin, noted that the firm also did free eye screening for members of the club in celebration of the World Sight Day.

Bassey, a vision technology entrepreneur and smart eye care advocate told South South PUNCH that the firm’s initiative is to expand public awareness of smart glasses in Nigeria by introducing the technology and highlighting its potential applications in everyday life, from the workplace and mobility to sport and selected assistive applications.

He said, “The initiative brought the message to the Benin Club Golf Section during the 31st Benin Club Golf Section Ladies Open, as part of its World Sight Day engagement under the message, “Love Your Eyes the Smart Way.”

“The programme featured free eye screening and the presentation of smart glasses to the overall female winner and the Lady Captain. The glasses were presented by Dr Emmanuel Ighodaro, former Edo State chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Benin City.

“The programme received support from Edo Vintage Lion Club and the Benin Club Golf Section, helping bring eye health awareness and emerging eyewear technology into a sporting community.

According to Bassey, engagements like the golf club event provide an opportunity to introduce Nigerians to a category of technology that remains unfamiliar to many, noting that smart glasses can combine conventional eyewear with digital features such as audio playback, hands-free calls, cameras and voice interaction, depending on the model.

He said that by presenting the technology in familiar public settings, the initiative aims to encourage curiosity and help people begin to understand its possible uses.

“Sport is one of several environments in which smart glasses may have relevant applications. For golfers, audio and communication features may be useful outside active play, provided they do not distract from the game or conflict with competition rules.

“Other models may offer features relevant to drivers and working professionals, while specialised assistive technologies can support certain daily activities for people with visual impairments. The suitability of any device depends on its capabilities, the user’s needs and the context in which it is used.

“The latest engagement also builds on AutoVision’s earlier smart glasses showcase at the Benin Club Golf Section Captain’s Inaugural Golf Tournament in 2025. Together, the two engagements reflect a continuing effort to bring smart vision technology into public conversations and make its potential applications more visible to communities beyond the technology sector,” he added

He noted professional eye care and responsible use remain important as smart glasses become more visible.

“Smart glasses do not replace eye examinations or qualified eye care professionals, and digital features do not automatically make every device suitable for every vision need,” he said.
