Eastleigh Tragedy: Fresh Details Emerge as 16 People Remain Missing

The search for people missing after a multi-storey building collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, is continuing, with 16 people still unaccounted for.

The building collapsed along 9th Street Avenue on Friday, October 23, 2026, leaving families worried about the fate of their relatives.

According to reports, the number of missing people reduced from 20 after authorities conducted further checks. The Kenya Red Cross Society and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been involved in efforts to establish how many people are still missing.

Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba said authorities were using mobile phone information to help trace the missing individuals. Some phone records showed that the last communication from nine people was near the collapsed building.

Four other cases were awaiting additional information, while three families had not provided phone numbers that could help investigators with the search.

Rescue teams have faced challenges because of the heavy concrete and other materials covering the affected area. Emergency workers are using specialised equipment to examine the rubble and identify possible signs of life.

The operation has brought together several agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces, police, Kenya Red Cross and Nairobi County emergency teams.

The tragedy has also raised questions about building safety and construction regulations in Nairobi. The Architectural Association of Kenya has called for accountability and proper investigations to establish whether the building met the required construction standards.

Meanwhile, some businesses located near the collapsed building have been allowed to reopen after remaining closed for several days. However, access to the rescue area remains restricted as the operation continues.

Families are still waiting for information about their missing relatives as rescue workers continue searching through the remains of the building.

Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the collapse through investigations.
