‘Biggest and best news’ – Kompany discharged from hospital after collapse

Vincent Kompany is recovering at home following treatment at hospital after being taken ill at Bayern Munich’s training ground, it has been revealed. The cause of his collapse was meningitis, according to Max Eberl, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director.

On Friday, head coach Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing at their Sabener Strasse complex while watching a training session involving the club’s reserve team.

According to reports, Kompany received medical attention before he was taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance. A rescue helicopter was also seen arriving at the facility.

Eberl gave an update on Saturday saying Kompany was “stable”, and ahead of Bayern’s DFB-Pokal match against Magdeburg on Wednesday, provided more information about the condition of the Belgian coach.

“I think this is the biggest and best news for all of us,” Eberl told ARD, in quotes reported by Der Spiegel.

“They’ve found what it is. It’s meningitis which caused this incident last Friday.

“But he was allowed to go home now, and can do his rehab there. For him, rehab means rest and medication. And then I’m very, very sure that he’ll be back on the sidelines at 100% very soon.”

According to the NHS, meningitis is an “infection of the protective layers that cover the brain and spinal cord”.

Bayern’s assistant coaches, Aaron Danks and Rene Maric, have taken charge of the first team in Kompany’s absence, and were in the dug-out for Wednesday’s cup match.

Eberl said Kompany would be given “all the time he needs”.

“We’ve always said that,” he said. “That’s why we’ve been talking about weeks from the very beginning.”

Kompany is now into his third season as Bayern’s head coach, having replaced Thomas Tuchel in the summer of 2024.

He has twice won the Bundesliga title and the German Super Cup, while his Bayern side are also the defending champions of the DFB-Pokal.

Bayern are tied with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga on 17 points after seven matches, and face each other on Saturday.
