Bawumia Gives Report on Meeting with Vehicles and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with the leadership of the Vehicles and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) as part of his stakeholder consultations to identify the major challenges affecting the vehicle trading industry and explore possible solutions.

In a post on his official Facebook page on October 28, 2026, Dr. Bawumia shared details of the engagement, which focused on concerns raised by vehicle dealers and potential measures to improve their business operations.

Among the issues discussed were high import duties and delays in clearing vehicles at Ghana’s ports. Dealers say these challenges increase operating costs, slow down business activities and make it more difficult for them to serve customers efficiently.

The proposed introduction of pre-shipment inspection for vehicles was another major issue raised during the meeting. According to Dr. Bawumia, both sides agreed that the proposed measure should be abolished.

The discussions also covered access to financing through the Ghana EXIM Bank. Vehicle dealers expressed interest in obtaining credit more easily to expand their businesses, improve their operations and remain competitive in the market.

Another concern was the enforcement of laws intended to protect Ghanaian retailers from unfair competition involving foreign retailers. The matter formed part of broader discussions about creating a business environment that supports local entrepreneurs and allows them to compete under fair conditions.

Dr. Bawumia described the engagement as fruitful and indicated that discussions would continue between the respective teams to develop specific policies addressing the concerns raised.

He also expressed appreciation to VADUG’s leadership for participating in the meeting and sharing their perspectives on the industry.

The consultation forms part of Dr. Bawumia’s wider engagement with stakeholders to understand the difficulties confronting different sectors of the economy. Further discussions are expected to help both sides examine possible policy measures relating to vehicle imports, port procedures, financing and the protection of local businesses.

However, the proposed policy changes remain subject to further discussions and clarification, with additional engagement needed to determine how the issues raised could translate into concrete measures.
