Akandoh urges contractors to speed up La General Hospital project ahead of 2028 deadline

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged contractors working on the €50 million La General Hospital project to accelerate construction works to ensure the facility is completed and commissioned by January 2028.

The Minister made the call during an inspection of the project, where he acknowledged progress made so far but stressed the need to speed up work given the importance of the hospital to residents of La and surrounding communities.

“We can speed up so that we can beat the deadline,” Mr Akandoh said, urging the contractors to maintain the pace needed to meet the scheduled completion date.

He emphasised that the hospital was expected to serve a large population and would play a significant role in improving access to healthcare in the area.

Mr Akandoh also dismissed delays in payments as a justification for slow progress, insisting that the government had been making payments to contractors on time.

He disclosed that the latest interim payment certificate for the project had been submitted and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for the necessary processes.

The Minister further called for a review of the proposed capacity of the hospital’s emergency department to ensure it would adequately meet the facility’s needs.

According to him, increasing the emergency department’s capacity could help address challenges associated with the availability of beds for patients requiring urgent medical attention.

The €50 million project includes the construction of the hospital and the provision and installation of medical equipment to support healthcare delivery when the facility becomes operational.

Mr Akandoh assured that the Ministry of Health would continue monitoring the project to ensure the work progresses according to schedule and the hospital is completed and equipped for use.

The La General Hospital project is expected to improve access to healthcare services for residents of La and surrounding communities when completed.
