Soweto Derby Debuts: Seven Players Who Could Make History in Pirates vs Chiefs Showdown

The countdown to one of South African football’s most anticipated fixtures has begun, with Orlando Pirates preparing to face Kaizer Chiefs in the first Soweto Derby of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

Scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, at the iconic FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, the highly anticipated encounter promises excitement, intense competition and another opportunity for players to establish themselves in South African football history.

While supporters will be eager to see their favourite stars deliver outstanding performances, attention is also turning towards seven players who could experience the unforgettable atmosphere of the Soweto Derby for the first time.

According to reports highlighting potential debutants, several players from both camps could have an opportunity to make their mark in this historic rivalry.

Orlando Pirates have enjoyed an encouraging period under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, with several players contributing to the team’s strong performances this season.

Among the players who could make their first derby appearances are Simphiwe Masilela, Thapelo Mokobodi and Bulelani Sigomoshe.

Masilela’s pace, attacking ability and confidence on the ball could provide Pirates with an additional attacking option. However, the young attacker will need to make the right decisions in possession if he gets the opportunity to feature in such a demanding encounter.

Mokobodi has also impressed with his performances in midfield. His ability to contribute defensively while helping the team transition into attack could prove valuable against a determined Chiefs side.

Meanwhile, Sigomoshe could have an important role to play in defence, particularly if Pirates need to adjust their defensive setup because of injury concerns.

For these players, a strong performance could represent a significant step forward in their Pirates careers.

Chiefs’ Potential Debutants Face a Big Test

Kaizer Chiefs also have players who could experience the intensity of the Soweto Derby for the first time.

Defender Thabo Moloisane is among the names attracting attention ahead of the clash. Having joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC, the centre-back could play an important role in strengthening the team’s defensive structure.

His composure, positioning and ability to deal with Pirates’ attacking threats will be crucial if he is selected.

Attacker Faiz Abrahams is another player who could benefit from the occasion. The forward, who joined Chiefs on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch, will be eager to make a positive impression should he receive an opportunity.

Midfielder Thulani Mabaso could also be in contention. The young player will hope to convince coach Fernando da Cruz that he deserves greater involvement in the first team.

The Soweto Derby is more than an ordinary football match. It represents history, pride and the passionate rivalry between two of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.

With Pirates looking to maintain their strong form and Chiefs determined to deliver a statement performance, the potential debutants could find themselves under enormous pressure.

However, the occasion also presents an opportunity to become memorable figures in one of African football’s most celebrated rivalries.

Whether these players start or come off the bench remains to be seen, but their possible involvement adds another fascinating storyline to Saturday’s showdown.

For supporters, the biggest question is simple: Which player will rise to the occasion and make an unforgettable first impression in the Soweto Derby?
