Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Commends GNAT for Backing Cancer Care Through ThankYouTeacher Raffle

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has praised the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for launching an initiative aimed at celebrating teachers and acknowledging their contributions to the country’s development.

In a post shared on her official Facebook page on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Vice President recounted her remarks at the launch of GNAT’s ThankYouTeacher National Raffle Campaign.

She explained that the initiative reflects how strategic investments can benefit society beyond the organisation’s immediate membership. She specifically highlighted GNAT’s investment in the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, which contributes to efforts to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment in the country. She also recognised Mr. Kwame Pianim for his leadership and involvement in the initiative.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that the campaign was particularly relevant during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, explaining that a cancer diagnosis can create significant emotional, physical and financial difficulties for patients and their families.

She welcomed the partnership between the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, as part of efforts to improve access to specialised cancer services. She further stressed the importance of extending such services beyond Accra to reach more people across Ghana.

“Healthcare is about people,” she said, emphasising that compassion, affordable treatment and continuous support are essential components of effective healthcare delivery.

Although she acknowledged the government’s central responsibility for providing healthcare, the Vice President praised GNAT for using its resources to support initiatives that benefit the wider population.

She also noted that recognising teachers is important because their work contributes to the development of professionals across every sector of society.

The ThankYouTeacher National Raffle Campaign therefore combines appreciation for Ghanaian teachers with support for improved access to cancer care. The initiative also highlights the potential benefits of cooperation among government institutions, professional associations and healthcare providers in addressing national challenges.
