UGMC struggles to recruit and retain specialist doctors – CEO laments

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) is struggling to recruit and retain enough specialist doctors and consultants to meet its operational needs, Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdul-Samed Tanko has said.

Dr Tanko said the shortage of specialists was a wider national challenge that affected the centre’s ability to secure dedicated professionals across some medical fields.

“No matter what you do, if you don’t have enough specialists and you are not able to retain them, it becomes a challenge. So it’s one of our operational concerns as a centre,” he said on Joy News.

He said UGMC was working to attract specialists from abroad, particularly Ghanaian doctors practising overseas who might be willing to return and work in the country.

“Sometimes in Ghana here, it’s difficult to share so many specialists around. So you can’t get dedicated specialists, but we are trying our best to get some to join us,” he said.

Dr Tanko said the centre was also seeking to recruit returning Ghanaian medical professionals to strengthen its specialist services.
