Today’s Headlines: Freeze Tinubu’s $21.7bn loan until after 2027 elections – Agada, Trump administration sued over rollback of corporate ownership reporting rules

The presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, Arch. Peter Agada, has called on the National Assembly to suspend President Bola Tinubu’s fresh foreign loan request until after the 2027 general elections.

Agada made the call in Abuja on Wednesday in response to Tinubu’s request to the Senate for approval to borrow $20.52 billion and €1.045 billion to finance supplementary external borrowing for 2026 and 2027.

He expressed concern over the timing of the request, coming less than 110 days before the 2027 general elections, amid Nigeria’s rising public debt.

“We must account for how previous loans were spent before asking for approval to borrow more,” Agada said.

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) – Twenty-one US states and the District of Columbia sued, opens new tab President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday over its rollback of reporting requirements established under a 2021 law aimed at combating illicit finance.

The Trump administration in August finalized a rule exempting ‌US companies and individuals from reporting beneficial ownership information to the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit, rolling back reporting requirements established under the 2021 Corporate Transparency Act.

In their lawsuit, the coalition of mostly Democratic-led states asked a federal court to overturn the rule, which was part of a broader push by the Trump administration to curtail anti-corruption efforts.

“The executive branch cannot repeal a law by rulemaking. That fundamental principle resolves this case,” said the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of Oregon.

The lawsuit said that the Trump administration effectively gutted the 2021 law by exempting more than 99.9% of companies originally required to disclose information about their owners.

The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has warned against postponing the January 16, 2027 presidential election, using the Ebola outbreak as a justification for altering the electoral timetable.

The council alleged that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Joash Amupitan, could be summoned to the Presidential Villa and pressured to shift the election, although it did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the council said it was raising the alarm ahead of the alleged meeting and urged Amupitan to reject any attempt to change the election date.

Niger Delta elders, under the aegis of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, have declared that they will not endorse any presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

PANDEF said it will not endorse President Bola Tinubu or any other candidate ahead of the 2027 polls.

The elders stated this on Tuesday in Abuja after a crucial meeting of stakeholders from the South-South.

The National Chairman of the group, Godknows Igali, and the chairman of its Board of Trustees and former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah, while fielding questions from newsmen, said PANDEF remained neutral and non-partisan.
