Tinubu Unveils 400km Gas Pipeline to Power Industries Across Five Southeast States

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday October 28, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has launched a $100 million gas pipeline project designed to connect industrial and commercial centres across Nigeria’s Southeast, with construction expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027 and initial gas delivery projected for the second quarter of 2028.

The 400-kilometre network, being developed through the South East Development Commission (SEDC), will serve Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states. About 150 potential customers have been identified, with estimated demand of 254 million standard cubic feet of gas daily.

The project’s investment agreement was signed on Tuesday during the South-East Gas Infrastructure Investment and Project Development Ceremony at Hotel Presidential in Enugu.

Represented by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Tinubu described the initiative as a strategic investment to strengthen manufacturing, attract private capital and create employment opportunities.

“The Southeast’s entrepreneurial spirit is one of Nigeria’s greatest economic assets. I have always believed that the prosperity of the Southeast is inseparable from the prosperity of Nigeria,” the president said.

He explained that the pipeline would support manufacturers in Aba, industrial clusters in Nnewi and Onitsha, businesses in Enugu and agro-processing activities in Ebonyi, while connecting Imo’s gas resources to the wider regional economy.

Tinubu said the initial phase required approximately $100 million and commended the SEDC for committing $3 million towards the project while seeking additional funding from state governments, institutions and private investors.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step towards coordinated industrial development. He pledged that Southeast governors would accelerate right-of-way arrangements and environmental impact assessment approvals.

Imo Deputy Governor Chinyere Ekomaru also expressed support, while Anambra Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim stressed that the commission’s success would ultimately depend on tangible benefits for residents.

Project promoter GasSync said the pipeline would originate in Ohaji, Imo State, extending towards Owerri, Aba and Onitsha, with branches reaching Enugu and Ebonyi. Managing the construction from Ohaji and Onitsha simultaneously is intended to accelerate delivery.

GasSync representative Callistus Mba said procurement had begun and funding arrangements were progressing towards financial close. He identified regulatory approvals, community engagement and cooperation between governments as essential to meeting the proposed timeline.
