Tinubu Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers

Tinubu Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers

The agreement followed a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

According to the resolutions reached at the meeting, the government will also pay outstanding peculiar allowance arrears and settle 19 months of unpaid allowances owed to health workers.

The agreement comes as organised labour continues to press for better wages and measures to reduce the financial pressure on Nigerian workers.

The Federal Government’s transport intervention will run for six months, starting in November 2026. The agreement provides for a monthly payment of ₦70,000 across public service levels.

The Nigeria Labour Congress announced the agreement after discussions with government representatives at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The resolution states that the intervention will help cushion the impact of prevailing economic challenges on workers.

However, the agreement does not provide detailed information about the monthly payment dates or the administrative process for disbursing the allowance.

The government also approved payment of peculiar allowance arrears effective from May 1, 2026. Officials plan to pay the outstanding amounts in three equal monthly instalments, beginning in November.

The agreement covers several other welfare issues, including outstanding allowances for health workers and further discussions on the national minimum wage.

The agreement also provides for the settlement of 19 months of outstanding allowances owed to health workers.

According to the resolutions, the government will redeem the arrears within three months, beginning in December 2026.

The agreement addresses some of the welfare concerns raised by organised labour, although several demands remain unresolved.

The Federal Government and the NLC also agreed to establish a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee and begin discussions immediately. However, both parties have yet to agree on the effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.

The latest intervention follows renewed discussions over workers’ welfare, the rising cost of living and outstanding agreements between the government and organised labour.

The NLC has continued to push for measures that would ease the financial burden on workers, including action on transport costs and improved wages.

The Federal Government’s commitments will now face the test of implementation, particularly whether the agreed payments begin on schedule and reach the workers covered by the agreement.

For public service workers, the six month allowance offers a defined period of additional financial support. However, the agreement does not establish whether the intervention will continue after the six month period ends.

The government and labour representatives are expected to continue addressing outstanding welfare issues as negotiations proceed.
