SASSA Changes November Grant Payment Dates Ahead of Local Elections

Millions of South Africans who depend on government grants will need to plan their money with care in the coming weeks. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced new payment dates for November 2026, because the local government elections fall on the first Wednesday of the month.

SASSA worked with the national finance department to bring payment dates forward. The aim is to stop election day crowds from clashing with the usual rush at pay points and welfare branches, so that voting and grant collection do not get in each other’s way.

Older persons will feel the change first. About four million pensioners are due to be paid at the end of October instead of in the first days of November. Officials have pointed out one practical problem with this. Because the money arrives earlier than usual, pensioners will have to stretch it for longer before their December payments come in ahead of the festive season.

Other grants follow a staggered timetable. Disability grants are scheduled for the first Monday of November, and child support grants will be processed the following Tuesday. A review day is set for later in the same week.

The amounts themselves have not changed. Pensioners aged 60 to 74 still receive R2 400 a month, while those aged 75 and older, as well as military veterans, receive a slightly higher amount. Child support and disability grants stay at their current levels, and no mid-year increases have been applied.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to collect their money at retail pay points, at ATMs or through their bank cards, rather than travelling to SASSA offices. This helps keep the offices from becoming overcrowded.

On the wider policy front, the temporary Social Relief of Distress grant for unemployed people has been renewed for another period. A permanent income support system for all has not yet been agreed on. Authorities are also tightening controls on the grant system. These include biometric identity checks, digital record checks and tools that link grant records to employment data, all meant to reduce fraud and send recovered money back to public priorities.
