Ruto courts Russian investors with Kenya’s 93% green power advantage

President William Ruto has pitched Kenya’s renewable energy potential to Russian investors, highlighting the country’s reported 93 per cent renewable electricity generation as he seeks to attract investment in geothermal power, green hydrogen and other strategic sectors.

Ruto’s visit to Moscow provides Kenya with an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations through trade, investment and technology partnerships, while promoting the country as a destination for businesses seeking opportunities in clean energy and industrial development.

Kenya’s renewable energy sector has become a key part of its economic strategy, with geothermal, hydro, wind and solar power contributing to electricity generation. The country’s geothermal resources, particularly in the Rift Valley, offer opportunities for expanding power production and supporting industries that require reliable, low-carbon electricity.

The President’s investment pitch comes as Kenya seeks to increase its electricity generation capacity and attract private capital into emerging energy technologies. Geothermal development remains a priority because it can provide a steady supply of electricity, unlike some renewable sources whose output depends on weather conditions.

Green hydrogen is also emerging as a potential investment area. Produced using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, the fuel can support industrial processes seeking to reduce carbon emissions. It could also create opportunities in fertiliser production, manufacturing and future export markets.

However, developing a competitive green hydrogen industry will require significant investment, modern infrastructure, reliable demand and favourable production costs. Partnerships with international investors could help Kenya access the technology, expertise and financing needed to advance such projects.

Beyond energy, Kenya is seeking to expand trade with Russia and attract investment in agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure and digital technology. The country is also interested in increasing exports of tea, coffee, flowers and fresh produce, while encouraging more value addition to agricultural products before they reach international markets.

Stronger commercial ties could open new opportunities for Kenyan businesses, although the scale of the benefits will depend on the agreements reached, their financing and their implementation.

Kenya’s renewable energy resources offer a potential advantage in attracting industries seeking cleaner power supplies. Nevertheless, investors will need clear regulations, dependable infrastructure and commercially viable projects before committing substantial capital.

As Ruto engages Russian investors, the government faces the task of translating investment discussions into concrete agreements, new businesses and employment opportunities for Kenyans.

The success of the visit will ultimately depend on whether the proposed partnerships deliver measurable economic benefits and help Kenya turn its renewable energy resources into a foundation for industrial growth, innovation and increased exports.
