Northern Christians Mourn Sheikh Masussuka, Urge Security Agencies To Fish Out Killers
The Northern Christians Association (NCA) has condemned the gruesome killing of Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, in Katsina State, calling on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. Chairman of the association, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, in a statement on Tuesday, described the killing as particularly painful given the late cleric’s commitment to promoting religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.
Masussuka and Abubakar were reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle in front of the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State on Monday evening, October 26, 2026. Police have reportedly commenced investigation to track down those responsible. Rev. Hayab said the values the late Imam stood for must not be undermined by violence, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the nation. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, the Muslim community, and the governments and people of Katsina and Bauchi states. The NCA chairman urged security agencies to leave no stone unturned in investigating the killing, identifying the perpetrators and establishing the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the cleric’s peacebuilding activities had any connection with the incident. Hayab also called on the government and security agencies to step up security measures across vulnerable communities in Northern Nigeria, with improved intelligence gathering, surveillance and proactive operations to prevent further attacks. He encouraged preachers committed to peace, unity and harmony not to be discouraged or allow the killing to instil fear in them or deter them from their calling. According to him, religious leaders who dedicate themselves to preaching tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence must not abandon their efforts because of violence or intimidation. He stressed that the death of a cleric known for promoting religious harmony should strengthen, rather than weaken, the resolve of peace-loving Nigerians to reject hatred, intolerance and violence. Hayab said the values Masussuka represented were essential to building a society where people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds could live together peacefully, urging religious leaders to continue using their platforms to promote understanding and unity. The Northern Christian leader further called for adequate protection for religious leaders and other citizens working to promote peaceful coexistence, stressing that criminal violence must not be allowed to silence voices advocating peace. While lamenting the resurgence of insecurity in some parts of the country, Rev. Hayab urged Christians and Muslims to remain united against insecurity and resist any attempt to exploit the tragedy to create religious tension, deepen divisions or encourage retaliation. The NCA commiserated with the bereaved families, the Muslim Ummah, the government and people of Katsina State, as well as the people of Bauchi State, from where the late cleric reportedly hailed. He prayed for comfort and strength for the families and associates of the deceased, while urging residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist investigation. 📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
