“Nobody can tell me to take off my hat, I want people to accept me for who I am” – Safo Newman

Ghanaian musician Safo Newman has insisted that he will not allow external pressure to dictate his appearance, declaring that he wants people to accept him for who he is rather than expect him to change his distinctive style.

Speaking on Angel FM Kumasi, the singer said nobody had the right to compel him to remove the hat that has become a recognisable part of his public image.

“Nobody can tell me to take off my hat, I want people to accept me for who I am,” Newman stated.

His comments come amid continuing discussions about his appearance, personal branding and how he should present himself as he builds his career in Ghana’s competitive music industry.

Newman became widely known following the success of his song “Akokoa”, which attracted considerable attention from music lovers and received public endorsement from rapper Sarkodie. Since then, his close-fitting beanie hat has become closely associated with his identity as an artiste.

The musician previously explained that the hat was more than a fashion accessory. In an interview with Graphic Showbiz in March 2024, he disclosed that wearing a beanie was his way of expressing gratitude to a benefactor who had supported his music ambitions financially and emotionally since 2019.

According to Newman, the benefactor regularly wore a similar hat and had given him several beanies. Wearing them therefore served as a reminder of the person who believed in him before he gained wider public recognition.

Newman’s appearance has also attracted differing opinions from established musicians. In May 2024, Shatta Wale criticised the way the singer’s image was being managed, arguing that greater attention should be paid to his presentation and branding.

However, Newman’s latest remarks suggest that he intends to remain true to his personal identity instead of changing his appearance to satisfy public expectations.

The singer’s position also highlights a wider debate in the entertainment industry about individuality, image management and the pressure artists face to conform to prevailing standards.

For Newman, the priority is acceptance and the freedom to express himself while allowing his music and talent to define his place in the industry.
