MTN Ghana to Build 500 New Cell Sites in Network Upgrade

If you live outside the big cities in Ghana, your phone service is often patchy or missing completely. But MTN Ghana is set to change that. The company plans to build 500 brand new cell sites across the country over the next three years. This massive effort is part of a US$1.1 billion investment to seriously upgrade the mobile network infrastructure in Ghana.

Think of cell sites as the big towers that send and receive your phone signals. Adding 500 more means better coverage, especially where the network is weakest. This push will make things like mobile money transfers, online learning, and even simple phone calls much easier and more reliable for more Ghanaians across the country.

David Gyimah Boadi, General Manager for MTN Ghana’s Southern Region, announced this plan at the company’s 2026 Regional Media and Stakeholder Forum in Koforidua. The company has already set aside US$380 million just for this year alone to kickstart the expansion.

The goal is to get more Ghanaians connected to services. As demand for mobile money and digital services keeps growing, having a strong signal is more important than ever. Right now, many people outside urban areas without good signals cannot easily use essential digital services.

This rollout of 500 new sites means faster data speeds and better reach for people in underserved communities. It will help everyone stay connected to their families and businesses, no matter where they are in Ghana.

The investment announcement coincides with MTN Ghana marking 30 years of operations in the country. They have shared strong financial results recently, showing growth across their services and profits.

Beyond the towers are not the only thing they are improving. MTN is also looking at teaching skills and supporting new businesses through programs. Their MTN Skills Academy aims to train over 100,000 young Ghanaians in digital skills. They are also partnering with universities like the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to help start-ups grow.

Customers should still be careful when using digital services, even with better connectivity, as MTN keeps strengthening their data security systems. However, they have asked customers to remain cautious when using digital services overall.
