Mahama Issues Strong Warning to NPP and Their Minority in Parliament After They Boycotted Forums
President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the NPP and its parliamentary Minority to take part in the National Economic Dialogue, saying a united effort is needed to address Ghana’s economic difficulties.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address, Mahama recalled that the NPP had stayed away from the previous Senchi Economic Forum.
He urged the party to participate in the upcoming discussions rather than miss another opportunity to help shape solutions to the country’s economic problems.
The President’s appeal comes as opposition lawmakers question the government’s financial decisions. Nhyiaeso MP Stephen Amoah alleged that the administration had borrowed GH¢59 billion over a short period and demanded clarification about the sources of funds being used to support government programmes and payments. He also compared the reported borrowing with that of the previous Akufo-Addo government.
Mahama further highlighted youth unemployment as a serious challenge that could increase public frustration and create national security concerns.
He announced the establishment of a Ministry of Youth Development as part of efforts to address the issue and improve opportunities for young people.
He maintained that the government’s economic interventions would produce results in time and encouraged all stakeholders to contribute to national recovery efforts.
The National Economic Dialogue is expected to bring together government representatives, opposition parties, economists, businesses, and civil society groups to discuss the economy and consider practical measures for improvement.
The call for NPP participation reflects the need for broad cooperation, despite continuing disagreements over public borrowing and spending.
