Lagos drives civil service legacy through mentorship and knowledge transfer

The Lagos State Ministry of Establishments and Training has organised a capacity-building programme to promote the preservation and transfer of institutional knowledge among civil servants.

The training, themed ā€œPreserving Institutional Wisdom: A Legacy Knowledge Transfer Programme,ā€ was held on October 26, 2026, at the Lagos Television (LTV) Complex and Combo Hall.

The programme was designed to educate public servants on the importance of sharing professional experience, skills and knowledge with colleagues to strengthen continuity and improve efficiency across government institutions.

It also highlighted the need for experienced employees to pass on the lessons and best practices acquired in their respective fields to ensure that valuable institutional knowledge is not lost when staff members retire, leave office or move to other roles.

One of the facilitators, Mr. Leye Adewusi, stressed the importance of overcoming barriers to knowledge sharing and encouraging civil servants to equip others with the information and skills needed to perform their responsibilities effectively.

He noted that information sharing was essential to evaluating existing systems and determining whether current infrastructure and practices adequately supported institutional goals.

Adewusi further explained that effective knowledge transfer should include documented milestones, comprehensive handover notes and lessons learned to ensure that important information remains accessible to incoming personnel.

He also emphasised the need for continuous learning and professional development among public servants, urging them to remain committed to acquiring knowledge and sharing their expertise with others.

The programme underscored the importance of mentorship, documentation and collaboration in building a more efficient and sustainable public service.

It reaffirmed that institutional knowledge transfer is not merely about handing over responsibilities but also about creating a system that enables future generations of civil servants to build on existing experience, sustain progress and deliver improved public service.
