Kwame Pianim Names Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang His Favourite Economist
Kwame Pianim, a member of the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE), has commended Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang for her perceived concern for the welfare of poor and ordinary Ghanaians, describing her as his favourite economist.
Pianim made the statement at the launch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Thank You Teacher National Raffle in Accra, where he highlighted what he considers an important quality in economic leadership: the ability to understand the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.
According to him, Opoku-Agyemang stands out for her consideration of people whose livelihoods are directly affected by government decisions and economic policies.
His comments have drawn attention to the role of compassion in economic management, particularly as policies affecting employment, education, prices and public expenditure continue to shape the daily lives of households across the country.
Pianim’s endorsement reflects his view that economic leadership should extend beyond financial statistics, projections and growth figures to include a clear understanding of the challenges confronting vulnerable members of society.
For many Ghanaians, government economic decisions have immediate consequences, influencing the affordability of essential commodities, access to education and employment opportunities, as well as the ability of families to meet their basic needs.
The PAGE member’s remarks therefore underscore the importance of considering the social impact of economic policies when formulating national development strategies.
Although economic growth and financial stability remain central to national development, their effectiveness is often measured by the extent to which citizens experience improvements in their living conditions.
By describing Opoku-Agyemang as his preferred economist, Pianim has highlighted empathy and an appreciation of ordinary people’s circumstances as qualities he values in economic decision-making.
The statement was made during an event organised to celebrate teachers and recognise their contributions to education through GNAT’s Thank You Teacher National Raffle.
Pianim’s comments have consequently renewed attention to the importance of people-centred economic policies and the need for national development initiatives to address the practical concerns of the citizens they are designed to benefit.
