Kenyan Family Arrives to Bury Father, Only to Discover His Body Has Disappeared from Morgue

A Kenyan family was plunged into grief and confusion after arriving at a hospital mortuary to collect their father’s body for burial, only to discover that the remains could not be accounted for.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, leaving relatives stranded at the hospital as mourners waited at home for the burial ceremony to proceed.

The deceased, identified as Humphrey Jero Lang’ata, died on Saturday before his family began making arrangements to lay him to rest.

According to the family, they had visited the mortuary earlier in the week and confirmed that his body was there. They said they had seen a tag bearing his name, giving them confidence that the identification process had been completed correctly.

Among those seeking answers was his grandson, Morris Mutwiri Muruja, from Nkangani Village in Tharaka Nithi County.

By Tuesday morning, the family had finalised preparations for the burial. They had organised transport, informed the church and gathered mourners at home in readiness for the ceremony.

However, their plans were disrupted when they arrived at the hospital to collect the body and discovered that the remains presented to them did not belong to their grandfather.

The family said they were subsequently unable to establish where his body had been taken.

“We are now certain that our relative’s body is not here, and what is even more distressing is that the hospital does not know where it is,” Morris said, according to the report.

Daughter Questions Mortuary’s Identification Process

Patricia, the deceased’s daughter, was particularly distressed because she remembered seeing her father’s body on Sunday.

She recalled noticing that his fingernails were long and suggesting that someone groom them before the burial.

Patricia said the name tag on his hand had been visible during the earlier visit, making the family’s latest experience difficult to understand.

She questioned why the identification details had apparently not been cross-checked before the body was presented for collection.

“Now they are telling us something about the tag on the leg being different,” she said. “I do not understand why they did not compare both tags before showing us the body.”

The family believes that comparing the identification details could have helped prevent the confusion or revealed the problem before burial day.

Family Fears Another Burial May Have Taken Place

The situation became even more distressing when relatives reportedly learnt that their father’s body might have been released to another family.

That possibility raised fears that the remains could already have been buried elsewhere, potentially forcing the family to consider exhumation to establish what had happened.

For the relatives, the uncertainty added to the pain of losing a loved one. Instead of preparing to give him a final send-off, they found themselves searching for answers about the whereabouts of his body.

The family also raised concerns about the hospital’s record-keeping and how the alleged mix-up had been handled.

They claimed that some entries in the hospital documents appeared to have been altered, although the circumstances surrounding the alleged changes were not independently established in the report.

Relatives further questioned why staff reportedly asked them to sign paperwork when they visited the facility to deliver clothing for the deceased.

They said the request raised concerns about the timing of the documentation, given the problems they were experiencing.

Relatives Question Hospital’s Handling of the Case

Patricia said the family had been left waiting for hours without receiving a satisfactory explanation from the hospital management.

According to the family, other people were collecting bodies while they remained at the facility, uncertain about what had happened to their father’s remains.

They also questioned why they had not been informed earlier if hospital staff were aware of a possible identification problem.

“They made us wait, yet they knew there was a problem,” Patricia said.

The family wants the hospital to establish what happened, explain how the body went missing and provide answers about the handling of the mortuary records.

They are also seeking compensation for the emotional distress they say the incident has caused them.

“This is pure torture,” Patricia said. “Who will compensate our family for the emotional distress we are going through?”

The incident has left the family facing an additional ordeal at a time when they expected to be mourning and preparing to lay their loved one to rest.

As the search for answers continues, the relatives are seeking clarity on the whereabouts of Humphrey Jero Lang’ata’s body and an explanation of how the reported mix-up occurred.
