Kaizer Chiefs Get Major Soweto Derby Boost As Two Defenders Avoid Suspension
Kaizer Chiefs have received a timely boost ahead of Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, with defenders Inacio Miguel and Thabo Moloisane available after avoiding suspension concerns in their latest match.
The two teams will meet at FNB Stadium at 15:30, with Chiefs listed as the away side for the eagerly anticipated encounter.
Chiefs entered Tuesday’s Carling Knockout last-16 clash against TS Galaxy with both defenders on three yellow cards. A further booking in the domestic fixture would have triggered a one-match suspension, potentially ruling them out of the derby.
Miguel did not feature in the 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy, with the decision to keep him out helping the club avoid the risk of another booking ahead of the Pirates encounter.
The defender had received cautions in matches against Mamelodi Sundowns, Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC. His latest booking came in the game against Stellenbosch, leaving him one yellow card away from suspension.
Moloisane, meanwhile, started against TS Galaxy but was replaced late in the match by Zitha Kwinika as a precautionary measure to protect him from receiving a fourth caution.
His three bookings came in fixtures against Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
With neither player picking up another yellow card on Tuesday, both are eligible to feature against Pirates. Moloisane is also set to make his first appearance in the Soweto Derby, adding another storyline to Chiefs’ preparations for the contest.
The availability of the two defenders gives the technical team more options when selecting the side for one of South African football’s most closely followed fixtures.
Chiefs also have three players sitting on two yellow cards: Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Pule Mmodi and Siphesihle Ndlovu. Their disciplinary situation will remain worth monitoring as the team prepares for the derby.
The 3-0 win over TS Galaxy secured Chiefs’ progress from the Carling Knockout last 16, while also allowing them to approach Saturday’s meeting with Pirates without the immediate suspension concerns surrounding Miguel and Moloisane.
