Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Lists Four Economic Gains Under Mahama’s Government
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has highlighted improvements in Ghana’s economic indicators under the Mahama-led government, pointing to falling inflation, a stronger cedi, expanding economic activity and an improved debt situation.
Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2026 LAB Policy Colloquium, which was organised to review the performance of the government, she said the country had recorded progress but still had work to do.
“We have not reached our destination, but inflation has fallen substantially, the cedi has strengthened, economic activity has expanded, and the country’s debt situation has improved,” she said.
Her remarks presented the government’s economic performance as a work in progress, acknowledging reported gains while recognising that the country had yet to achieve all its objectives.
The four indicators she highlighted are central to Ghana’s economic debate. Inflation affects the pace at which prices rise and the purchasing power of households, while movements in the cedi influence the cost of imported goods and services. Economic activity provides an indication of business and production trends, while the country’s debt position remains important to public finances and the government’s ability to meet its obligations.
The Vice President’s comments came at a policy gathering intended to assess the Mahama administration’s performance and consider the direction of its policies. Such discussions offer the governing party an opportunity to review progress, identify challenges and examine areas where further action may be needed.
Her statement that Ghana had not yet reached its destination also signalled that the improvements she cited should not be interpreted as evidence that every economic challenge has been resolved.
For households and businesses, the significance of these indicators ultimately depends on how economic developments affect living costs, employment, investment and access to opportunities. Sustaining progress across these areas remains an important consideration in assessing the country’s economic direction.
The remarks formed part of the NDC’s broader review of the government’s record at the 2026 LAB Policy Colloquium. The Vice President’s assessment focused on the improvements she said had occurred, while leaving room for continued efforts to address the challenges facing Ghana’s economy.
