Fernando Da Cruz Comments on Rushwin Dortley’s Return

Fernando da Cruz Explains Rushwin Dortley’s Emotional Return to Kaizer Chiefs Action

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has expressed his happiness after Rushwin Dortley finally returned to action, bringing an emotional end to a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the talented defender.

Dortley made his long-awaited comeback after being out of action since March 2025, marking an important moment in his career as he continues working towards regaining his best form at Amakhosi.

The defender’s return comes as a welcome boost for the Soweto giants, who have been working to maintain consistency and strengthen their options as they compete across domestic and continental competitions. His absence has been a challenging period, making his return particularly significant for both the player and the technical team.

Da Cruz revealed that the decision to bring Dortley back into the team was not taken lightly. The coach admitted that he had reservations about including the defender in the starting line-up in recent weeks, especially when considering the demands of CAF competition.

However, Dortley’s performances during training sessions gradually convinced the coaching staff that the right moment had arrived to give him an opportunity.

“Since a few weeks ago, I’ve had hesitations to put him in the starting line-up, especially for the CAF games,” Da Cruz explained.

The coach added that what Dortley demonstrated in training ahead of the encounter against TS Galaxy, combined with discussions among the technical team, helped determine that Tuesday was the appropriate time for his return.

The decision ultimately gave the defender an opportunity to get back on the pitch and begin rebuilding his match fitness after spending such a long period away from competitive football.

Da Cruz was particularly pleased with the player’s attitude throughout his recovery. According to the coach, Dortley continued working hard behind the scenes despite the frustration of being unable to contribute on the field.

“I am very happy for Dortley as he hasn’t played in a long time, he’s worked very hard and at the end of the game, he was very emotional for this comeback,” the coach said.

His emotional reaction at the final whistle reflected the significance of the moment after months of rehabilitation, training and determination to return to action.
