EPA to Continue Styrofoam Ban Education Campaign Until January 2027

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will sustain its nationwide public education campaign on the ban on Styrofoam products until January 1, 2027, as part of efforts to ensure public awareness and compliance with the restriction.

The Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Professor Nana Ama Klutse, disclosed that the campaign would continue to educate the public, businesses and other stakeholders on the importance of complying with the ban.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring that Ghanaians understand the reasons behind the restriction and the need to move away from the use of Styrofoam products, particularly those commonly used for food packaging and takeaway meals.

The continued public education campaign is expected to engage traders, food vendors, manufacturers, distributors and consumers who may be affected by the ban. Through these engagements, the EPA hopes to improve understanding of the restrictions and encourage the adoption of more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Styrofoam products have raised environmental concerns because they are difficult to manage after disposal and can contribute to plastic pollution when improperly discarded. Their lightweight nature also allows them to spread easily into drains, waterways and other public spaces, creating additional waste management challenges.

The EPA’s decision to maintain the campaign until the beginning of 2027 highlights the importance of public cooperation in implementing environmental regulations. Authorities are expected to use the period to explain the requirements, address concerns and encourage businesses to adjust their operations accordingly.

For food vendors and other businesses that rely on disposable packaging, the transition may require identifying affordable and practical alternatives that meet food safety and environmental standards.

The success of the ban will depend not only on enforcement but also on the willingness of manufacturers, traders and consumers to comply with the restrictions.

By extending its public education efforts, the EPA aims to strengthen awareness and promote responsible waste management practices across the country.

As the January 1, 2027, date approaches, attention will remain on how effectively the campaign improves compliance and helps reduce the environmental problems associated with Styrofoam waste in Ghana.
