DStv Rolls Out More Affordable Packages from November 5
The revised structure introduces lower-cost options for households seeking basic entertainment, alongside separate packages for customers interested in broader channel selections, football coverage and premium content.
The packages were announced at a joint press briefing involving the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation and MultiChoice Ghana on Monday, October 26.
Under the revised pricing structure, customers will be able to choose from the Starter, Select, Sports and Ultimate packages.
The Select Pack will cost GHĀ¢100 per month and offer 123 channels, providing a broader selection than the Starter option.
The Ultimate Pack, priced at GHĀ¢570 per month, will combine premium entertainment with an expanded sports offering.
The different price points are intended to allow households to select packages that reflect their budgets and viewing preferences.
Some DStv customers who spoke to Channel One Business described the reductions as a more practical intervention than changes to package names or the addition of more content without lower subscription fees.
The customer argued that reducing the amount paid every month provided a more visible benefit than expanding content while maintaining relatively high subscription costs.
The reaction reflects concerns among households that have had to balance pay-TV subscriptions with essential expenses such as food, transportation, electricity, housing and education.
He explained that the decoder had remained unused and had gathered dust, but the lower prices had encouraged him to consider subscribing again.
āItās even gathered dust. So looking at the reduction in price now, I have decided to go back. Iāve decided to go back,ā he said.
His reaction suggests that the revised packages may attract customers who still own DStv equipment but have stopped paying for active subscriptions.
Such inactive devices are sometimes referred to as āghost decodersā because they remain in customersā homes without generating regular subscription revenue for the company.
āSo the reduction in price is rather going to help MultiChoice. They are also going to get back what they are calling the ghost decoders,ā he said.
Customers who left the service because of affordability concerns may compare the lower-priced packages with other entertainment options before deciding whether to return.
The GHĀ¢50 Starter Pack represents the least expensive option under the revised structure.
Its introduction could make DStv more accessible to households that were previously unable or unwilling to maintain higher monthly subscriptions.
With access to 90 channels, the package is designed for customers seeking basic entertainment without the higher cost attached to sports and premium content.
However, its appeal will depend on the specific channels and programmes included in the final package.
The Select Pack provides an intermediate option between the entry-level and sports-focused packages.
The package may appeal to households that want more entertainment choices but do not require extensive sports coverage or premium channels.
The revised structure therefore creates a clearer progression between basic, mid-range and premium options.
Sports programming remains one of the major reasons many customers maintain pay-TV subscriptions, particularly during major football competitions and league seasons.
By offering a dedicated sports-focused package below the price of the Ultimate option, MultiChoice may attract customers who want football coverage without paying for the full premium entertainment bundle.
The company will need to clearly communicate the competitions and sports channels included to help customers determine whether the package offers sufficient value.
The Ultimate Pack will remain the most expensive option at GHĀ¢570 per month.
The price places it well above the other three packages, meaning it is likely to target households with higher entertainment budgets and broader viewing requirements.
Customers considering the Ultimate Pack will assess whether the combined sports, film, series and general entertainment offering justifies the monthly charge.
MultiChoice Ghana Country Chief Executive Officer Alex Okyere said the packages would provide different channel selections and content options.
A family mainly interested in basic entertainment can choose the Starter or Select package, while sports viewers can select the Sports option.
This flexibility may help households avoid paying for content they do not regularly watch.
Households may also compare DStv with streaming platforms and other entertainment services before deciding where to spend their monthly budgets.
Direct price reductions may attract customers initially, but maintaining them will require consistent value across the different packages.
The revised packages will officially take effect on November 5.
For households, the changes offer more control over monthly entertainment spending and a broader range of options between basic viewing and premium sports and entertainment.
