Akandoh Reveals Ghana’s Plan if Ebola Is Detected at Kotoka International Airport
Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the country has strengthened its preparedness to prevent and respond to a potential Ebola outbreak, urging citizens to remain calm.
During a visit to Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, October 28, he outlined a series of measures introduced to detect and manage suspected cases, including thermal scanners, electronic health declaration forms, laboratory testing and isolation facilities.
He said thermal scanners had been installed at the airport to screen arriving passengers, while electronic health declaration forms had been reviewed to improve health monitoring and support contact tracing in the event of a suspected infection.
Mr Akandoh explained that the revised forms were expected to be completed by passengers arriving in Ghana through the country’s airports.
The information collected would enable health authorities to assess potential health risks and identify contacts more efficiently if a suspected or confirmed case were detected.
The minister acknowledged that the government hoped to prevent any Ebola case from being recorded in Ghana but maintained that the country was prepared to respond appropriately should an infection occur.
He also highlighted efforts to strengthen Ghana’s laboratory capacity for the testing and diagnosis of suspected Ebola cases, identifying the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) and the national reference laboratory as key facilities supporting the response.
In addition, Mr Akandoh pointed to the availability of an infectious disease treatment centre that could be used to isolate and manage patients if an outbreak occurs.
