Traffic Along Waiyaki Way In Nairobi Came To Standstill As Students Protest To End Lecturers Strike

Traffic in Waiyaki Way in Nairobi came to a halt as angry students staged demos over the lecturers’ strike, lighting bonfires and barricading roads, making the road inaccessible and causing a snarl-up.

According to sources, several students staged protests along Waiyaki Way, heading towards Nairobi town, over the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

The demonstrations reportedly escalated into running battles between the students and police officers as tensions rose along the busy highway.

Police officers were forced to intervene by lobbying tear gas canisters to disperse the students, who had lit bonfires and barricaded the main road connecting the area to the city centre.

The confrontation disrupted the movement of motorists and other road users, leaving traffic at a standstill as officers attempted to restore order.

The latest protests come less than a week after another demonstration on October 2, when University of Nairobi (UoN) students demanded an end to the lecturers’ strike and the resumption of academic activities.

Students have continued to express frustration over the disruption of learning, with many concerned about delays in completing their courses and the uncertainty surrounding the academic calendar.

The demonstrations come amid a nationwide lecturers’ strike that began on October 2, 2026, following a dispute over the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Negotiations between university staff unions and the government have remained contentious, with unions demanding firm financial commitments to implement the agreement.

The CBA covers salaries, allowances and other employment benefits for university staff.

The strike has affected learning in public universities across the country, leaving students uncertain about when normal academic activities will resume.

University staff unions have maintained pressure on the government to honour the agreed terms, while students continue to bear the consequences of the prolonged dispute.
