There Was Disagreement Between Gachagua and Kalonzo Camp in Their Meeting, Reason Revealed

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka have pledged to work together to challenge President William Ruto in the August 10, 2027, General Election, despite differences over when to announce their joint presidential candidate.

During a meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home in Nyeri, Kalonzo’s camp proposed announcing the candidate by December 2026 to allow sufficient time for fundraising and building campaign networks.

However, Gachagua’s allies want the process delayed until a few months before the election, fearing early disclosure could allow Ruto to persuade opposition leaders to withdraw.

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua said the meeting did not agree on a specific date, although leaders acknowledged growing public impatience. He suggested the announcement could be a Christmas gift to Kenyans.

Gatanga MP Edward Muriu said the groups would formalise their cooperation through an agreement before forming a political coalition. Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru warned that announcing a candidate too early could weaken the opposition.

People’s Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro said the selection should be fair and based on merit, adding that his party would support a candidate chosen through consensus. The leaders aim to unite their supporters and defeat Ruto in 2027.
