Sundowns Humiliated: How Orlando Pirates Stole Relebohile Mofokeng Right Under Motsepe’s Nose

Relebohile Mofokeng Rejected R15,000 Sundowns Offer Before Choosing Orlando Pirates

South African football star Relebohile Mofokeng could have started his professional journey at Mamelodi Sundowns before becoming one of Orlando Pirates’ most exciting talents, according to revelations made by his father, Sechaba Mofokeng.

The revelation has sparked renewed discussion about how South Africa’s biggest clubs identify and develop young players, particularly those who eventually become important figures in domestic football.

According to Sechaba, Sundowns showed interest in signing the talented youngster and reportedly offered him R15,000 to join their Under-19 team. The proposed development plan involved Mofokeng progressing to the club’s reserve side competing in the DStv Diski Challenge if he impressed at youth level.

“Motsepe wanted him to play for the U19s and offered him R15,000 – and if he did well, they would promote him to the reserve team in the DDC,” Sechaba explained.

Despite the financial offer and the opportunity to develop at one of the country’s most successful clubs, Mofokeng ultimately chose a different path, joining Orlando Pirates instead.

The decision proved significant for his career. Pirates provided him with an opportunity to develop within their structures before making his senior debut in May 2023.

Mofokeng quickly attracted attention through his creativity, close control, technical ability and confidence in attacking situations. His performances established him as one of the most promising young footballers in South Africa and helped him earn recognition with Bafana Bafana.

His progress also contributed to Pirates’ success, while his growing reputation attracted interest from clubs abroad.

In July 2026, Pirates confirmed an agreement for his transfer to Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, representing another major milestone in his career.

For Sundowns, the revelation highlights how recruitment decisions can influence a player’s future. For Pirates, securing Mofokeng’s services proved a valuable investment, demonstrating the importance of development opportunities and a clear pathway towards senior football.
