The agency said it is tightening the screws on fraud and corruption to protect money meant for needy South Africans.
Sassa CEO Themba Matlou welcomed the recent dismissal of four officials following disciplinary proceedings over misconduct.
The four were based at offices in Tshwane, Soshanguve, Fochville and Roodepoort in Gauteng.
Two were dismissed for dishonesty linked to processing and verification of a fraudulent social grant application. The other two were found guilty in cases involving the unauthorised changing of beneficiaries’ payment details.
Criminal investigations into the matters are continuing.
Matlou said the dismissals showed that the agency was serious about holding officials accountable.
“No one is above the law, and no one is beyond accountability.”
He warned that officials would not be allowed to abuse their positions at the expense of vulnerable beneficiaries and taxpayers.
Since April 2025, Sassa has received 134 cases involving alleged fraud and misconduct by its officials. Of those, 106 have been finalised, while 28 are still pending.
Of the finalised cases, 65 officials were dismissed. Other outcomes included written warnings, final written warnings and suspensions without pay.
Some officials resigned while disciplinary proceedings were under way. Sixteen cases were withdrawn, while four officials were found not guilty.
The Eastern Cape had the most dismissals, with 19 officials losing their jobs. Gauteng and Mpumalanga each recorded 13 dismissals, followed by KZN with 11.
Sassa spokesman Dr Paseka Letsatsi said the agency had a mechanism to recover money lost through fraud.
He said the agency would look into dismissed employees’ funds and recover defrauded money where applicable.
Matlou said Sassa’s anti-fraud strategy involved catching wrongdoing, probing claims and ensuring guilty officials faced the music.
He also raised concern over death threats received by officials handling misconduct cases.
Matlou condemned attempts to intimidate or threaten employees carrying out their duties and said Sassa would support those acting within the law.
He said the agency would continue strengthening its controls and investigations to protect the social grant system and ensure that grants reached the right people.
Meanwhile, Sassa has announced changes to its November 2026 grant payment schedule to accommodate the confirmed voting date on Wednesday, 4 November.
Sassa has urged beneficiaries to plan accordingly and exercise their civic responsibility by voting.
Beneficiaries who do not receive their grant on 5 November are advised to visit their nearest Sassa office urgently, as their grant may have been suspended because they failed to undergo a required review.
The agency says it remains committed to paying the right grant to the right person at the right time and place.
