Salt On The Wound: Red Arrows Boss Handed Brand New Car For Humiliating Kaizer Chiefs In Durban
Kaizer Chiefs Eliminators Make Big Move as Red Arrows Reward Coach Chisi Mbewe
Kaizer Chiefs’ painful CAF Confederation Cup exit has been followed by an interesting development in Zambia, where Red Arrows FC head coach Chisi Mbewe has received an official staff vehicle after guiding his team into the competition’s group stage.
The Zambian outfit eliminated the Soweto giants on Friday, October 23, after winning 3-2 on penalties at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The achievement has now been celebrated by the club’s leadership, with Zambia Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Oscar Msitu Nyoni handing Mbewe a Toyota Mark X to support his professional responsibilities.
According to reports from Zambia, the vehicle was officially handed over at Zambia Air Force Headquarters on Monday, October 26, following Red Arrows’ historic qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in the club’s history.
Although the timing of the presentation has attracted attention following the elimination of Chiefs, the vehicle allocation was linked to an earlier commitment by the Air Force leadership to provide the coach with transport for his official duties.
Nyoni explained that the decision followed a request from Red Arrows president Colonel Moses Kambimbi, who had asked for a vehicle to help Mbewe carry out his responsibilities more effectively.
The commander subsequently fulfilled that commitment, with the vehicle intended to assist the coach with travelling to training sessions, the stadium and other official engagements.
The development has nevertheless highlighted the contrasting circumstances surrounding the two clubs. While Kaizer Chiefs remain one of South African football’s biggest institutions, Red Arrows have demonstrated that determination, tactical discipline and effective preparation can produce significant results against more established opponents.
Chiefs entered the second leg needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first meeting in Zambia. Bradley Cross scored in Durban to give the home side a 1-0 victory on the night, levelling the aggregate score at 1-1.
However, the Glamour Boys failed to complete their comeback during the penalty shootout, with Red Arrows holding their nerve to win 3-2 and secure qualification.
For Mbewe, the achievement represents an important milestone in his coaching career, while the vehicle allocation provides practical support as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.
Nyoni has also challenged Red Arrows to build on their continental success and target an even greater achievement by pushing towards the competition’s final.
Meanwhile, Chiefs must put the disappointment behind them and redirect their attention towards domestic football as pressure mounts on the club to deliver stronger performances.
