Ruto Announces Sh11 Billion Mining Plant in Taita Taveta
The Sh11 billion facility, owned by Devki Group of Companies, is located in Manga, near Voi town. It is designed to process iron ore into materials used in steel production, reducing Kenya’s reliance on imported steel products.
According to reports by the Daily Nation and the Kenya government, Ruto commissioned the project in December 2024. By September 2026, the plant had been completed and was awaiting its official launch, with electricity connection among the remaining preparations.
The President has repeatedly called for Kenya to process its minerals locally instead of exporting raw materials to other countries. He believes that adding value to locally mined resources will help create employment, support industries and strengthen the country’s economy.
The plant is expected to create thousands of jobs for young people and provide new business opportunities for residents. Devki Group chairman Narendra Raval previously said the project could employ about 3,000 people, with a large share of the jobs going to the local community.
The project is also expected to benefit miners in Kishushe, where iron ore deposits are transported to the processing facility. In June 2026, the first consignment of more than 10,000 tonnes of iron ore was transported from Kishushe to the factory, according to The Standard. The investment could also support the construction industry by providing locally processed materials for steel manufacturing. This may help reduce the cost of importing some steel products while creating opportunities for transporters, suppliers and other businesses.
However, the project’s long-term success will depend on reliable electricity, a steady supply of iron ore and cooperation between the company, government and local communities. Residents will also be looking for the promised jobs and other economic benefits to reach the surrounding areas.
Ruto’s announcement comes as his administration seeks to increase local processing of minerals and expand manufacturing. The government hopes investments such as the Manga plant will help Kenya gain more value from its natural resources instead of relying mainly on exporting raw materials.
