Rivalry? Kitui Elected Leaders Skip Ruto’s Cement Plant Groundbreaking in Ngaaie

Political tensions in Kitui County came into focus after several prominent elected leaders were notably absent during President William Ruto’s visit to Ngaaie, Mwingi North, for the groundbreaking ceremony of a multibillion-shilling cement factory.

The event raised questions about the relationship between local political leaders and the national government, particularly as political alignments ahead of the 2027 general election continue to take shape.

During the ceremony, attention appeared to focus on grassroots representatives, members of the county assembly and aspiring politicians seeking various elective positions.

The absence of several prominent county leaders added a political dimension to an event largely centred on industrial development and economic investment.

Despite the apparent political differences, President Ruto proceeded with the launch of the KSh 70 billion Devki industrial complex.

The project is expected to utilise the region’s substantial limestone deposits, reduce reliance on imported clinker, retain more economic value within Kenya and create approximately 4,000 direct jobs for young people.

The President also warned against extortion and political cartels that could undermine private investment, stressing the importance of protecting major development projects from interference.

Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho praised the government’s efforts to promote mineral beneficiation, saying the focus on processing locally available resources could help communities in the lower eastern region benefit more directly from their natural wealth.

While the cement factory promises significant economic opportunities, the absence of prominent local elected leaders has drawn attention to the region’s political dynamics.
