Prof. Isaac Boadi Calls for Accountability Over Economic Achievements
Professor Isaac Boadi, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP), has called for a shift in Ghana’s economic management approach, arguing that public officials must move beyond announcing large financial figures and demonstrate measurable results.
According to him, the country needs an approach that places greater emphasis on accountability, transparency and the actual impact of government policies rather than the size of financial commitments announced to the public.
In a statement shared by JoyNews, Prof. Boadi stressed that announcing billions of cedis or dollars does not automatically translate into meaningful economic progress.
“The era of announcing billions must give way to the era of accounting for results,” he said, adding that the size of an announcement should not be mistaken for the scale of an achievement.
His comments highlight the importance of assessing economic policies based on their outcomes and the extent to which they improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
Government officials frequently announce major financial allocations, investment commitments, development programmes and economic initiatives intended to stimulate growth. However, the real value of such announcements depends on whether the promised resources are released, properly utilised and translated into tangible benefits.
For instance, large allocations to infrastructure, education, healthcare and job creation should be assessed by examining completed projects, improved public services, employment opportunities and the efficient use of public funds.
Prof. Boadi’s argument suggests that economic performance should not be measured solely by the amount of money attached to a policy or programme. Instead, attention should be directed towards whether the initiative achieves its stated objectives and delivers value for money.
His position also raises questions about the need for stronger monitoring and evaluation systems to track government spending and development projects. Such systems can help identify delays, waste, implementation challenges and areas where public resources may not be producing the expected outcomes.
For citizens, accountability is particularly important because public expenditure affects essential services, employment prospects, business activities and the overall cost of living. Demonstrating clear results can also help build public confidence in government policies and institutions.
The call for results-based accountability comes at a time when economic decisions and public spending remain important issues in Ghana’s national discussions.
Ultimately, Prof. Boadi’s message is that economic announcements should be treated as commitments rather than proof of success. What matters most is whether those commitments translate into measurable improvements in the economy and the daily lives of Ghanaians.
