Paul Okoye: Going solo after Psquare split was easier โ I was the groupโs producer, writer, singer
According to a report by The Cable on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy and formerly one half of the defunct music duo Psquare, has revealed that pursuing a solo career after the groupโs breakup has been less stressful than working with his twin brother, Peter Okoye, also known as Mr P.
The singer made the disclosure during an interview with Luna Lifestyle TV, where he was asked whether his experience as a solo artiste had been easier than his years in Psquare.
Responding to the question, Rudeboy explained that transitioning to a solo career was relatively easy because he had already been heavily involved in creating the groupโs music.
According to him, his responsibilities as a producer, songwriter and vocalist meant that he was familiar with most aspects of the music-making process before the duo separated.
โLess stressful. Itโs the same me that was doing it in the group, with due respect. The same me that was doing it,โ the singer said.
He added that his involvement in songwriting, production and singing had made it easier for him to continue making music independently.
โIโm the producer, Iโm the writer, Iโm the singer. So moving out of the group, itโs still the same thing. Like I said, less stress,โ he explained.
Rudeboy also acknowledged the contributions of other members of his team but said working independently had given him greater creative freedom.
He noted that the process of creating music was different when he no longer had to deal with disagreements or questions about his creative decisions.
โWe have a team, everybody has their own contribution, but Iโm not saying the team I have doesnโt contribute. But what I mean, in the act of creating that music and whatever, I feel nobody is going to question me,โ he said.
Psquare, comprising twin brothers Paul and Peter Okoye, became one of Africaโs most successful music groups during the 2000s and 2010s.
The duo gained widespread popularity with hit songs such as Do Me, Chop My Money and Beautiful Onyinye, establishing themselves as major figures in Nigeriaโs entertainment industry.
Their energetic performances, dance routines and commercially successful albums earned them a large following across Africa and beyond.
However, their successful partnership suffered a major setback in 2017 when the brothers parted ways following disagreements over family and business matters, including the role of their elder brother, Jude Okoye, as their manager.
Following the breakup, Paul continued his career as Rudeboy, while Peter pursued music under the name Mr P.
Both singers released solo projects as they sought to establish their individual identities outside the group.
In November 2021, the brothers reconciled after approximately five years of estrangement, raising hopes among fans that Psquare would return permanently.
Their reunion was followed by renewed musical activities, including a headline concert in December of that year.
The development generated excitement among fans who had long hoped to see the brothers perform together again.
However, the reconciliation did not last. In 2024, Paul confirmed that the group had split once more, with fresh disagreements emerging between the brothers.
Paul also alleged that Peter was involved in his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), further deepening the public dispute.
In subsequent developments, Peter accused Paul of attempting to damage his reputation, highlighting the continuing tensions between the siblings.
