Nairobi: Woman Learns Her Hubby Has Been Sleeping with the Maid Before Dumping Her to Marry the Maid

A Kibra woman is struggling to rebuild her life after her husband allegedly left her and their critically ill son to run away with the househelp she had hired to help care for the family.

Lydia Omumea told TUKO.co.ke that her hardships began early. She lost both parents while in school and dropped out in Grade 8 before sitting her KCSE exams.

She later found a job at a hotel, where she met a man three years her senior, and the two married in 2015. They settled in Donholm, where he worked as a car salesman, and he helped her open a shoe shop.

Things changed when their son, then about five, was diagnosed with blood cancer and needed regular hospital visits.

To juggle the shop and the child’s care, Lydia took in a Ugandan woman on a friend’s recommendation. For two years, nothing seemed amiss.

“At first, she was not malicious, and she did not show any signs that she was,” she said.

Lydia says the woman later became defiant and often failed to pick up the boy from school. She once returned home early and found the househelp with her husband, and later found the two in her own bedroom.

Instead of the affair ending, she claims her husband stopped paying for their son’s treatment and moved her out of the bedroom so the househelp could take her place.

In 2025, Lydia came home to find the house locked, the key left with a neighbour and both of them gone. Her husband blocked her number, and his relatives offered no help. She sold household items to pay medical bills, and her sister moved her to Kibra.

Lydia admits she sank into depression and even had thoughts of dying, but she held on for her son’s sake. Today, she washes clothes and utensils for neighbours to make ends meet.
