Mzbel Shares Childhood Assault Experience, Highlights Why Survivors Remain Silent
Ghanaian musician and media personality Mzbel has spoken about being sexually assaulted at the age of 11 while living in Côte d’Ivoire, highlighting the fear and stigma that can prevent children from reporting abuse.
The singer shared her experience as part of a discussion about a sexual assault allegation involving a school headmaster in Obuasi.
Mzbel said children who experience abuse may remain silent because they fear being blamed, judged or rejected by adults. Rather than feeling assured of protection and comfort, some worry that disclosing what happened will lead others to label them as badly behaved.
Recounting her childhood, she said her mother moved the family from Ghana to Côte d’Ivoire in 1983 during the famine. According to her account, the assault occurred at the home of a Senegalese man, where she and members of her family regularly went to watch television.
The musician also disclosed that she had experienced sexual assault on more than one occasion throughout her life.
Her account formed part of a broader discussion about how families and communities respond to survivors, particularly children who may struggle to explain their experiences or seek help.
Mzbel has previously spoken against victim-blaming and the way public discussion of her experiences has been used to define her. Through her latest disclosure, she challenged attitudes that deepen survivors’ distress and discourage them from speaking out.
Her remarks highlighted the importance of responding to disclosures with care and support, rather than placing blame on those who have experienced abuse.
