Mudavadi And Wetangula Lands Into Trouble As Western Kenya Leaders Back Sifuna For 2027

Political realignments are emerging in Western Kenya after several prominent leaders called on the Luhya community to consider Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the presidency ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The leaders reportedly voiced their support during the funeral of former Cabinet minister and diplomat Burudi Nabwera, where discussions centred on regional unity, generational change and the community’s political future.

Former Cabinet minister Fred Gumo urged the Luhya community to unite behind Sifuna as a potential presidential candidate, arguing that younger leaders should be given an opportunity to pursue national leadership.

Noah Wekesa, chairperson of the Luhya Council of Elders and a former government minister, also appealed to community members to establish a common political direction ahead of the upcoming elections.

Former Cabinet minister Musikari Kombo challenged Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to support emerging leaders, suggesting that Sifuna deserved consideration for the country’s top seat.

Former Webuye MP Joash Wamang’oli and former Bumula MP Bifwoli Wakoli were also reported to have backed Sifuna.

The calls could complicate Western Kenya’s political calculations, given that Mudavadi and Wetang’ula have supported President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

However, the remarks do not amount to a formal regional endorsement of Sifuna.

With the 2027 elections approaching, further consultations and political alliances will determine whether the region settles on a common presidential candidate.
