According to a report by Vanguard Nigeria on Monday, October 26, 2026, Nigerian singer Burna Boy made history by presenting Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka with the Socrates Award at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.
The ceremony, held at the London Palladium, brought together some of the biggest names in football, entertainment and global sports.

The Socrates Award recognises footballers and their foundations for outstanding humanitarian work away from the pitch.
Saka received the honour for supporting children’s surgeries in Nigeria through his charitable efforts.
The English footballer of Nigerian heritage collected the award from Burna Boy during Monday night’s ceremony.
Burna Boy said, “Thierry Henry was one of my football heroes. I have opened a football academy in Nigeria, and I hope one day I will be back here to see one of my own people getting an award.”
The moment marked the first time a Nigerian artiste presented an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. It also highlighted the growing connection between African entertainment and international football.
The event featured nominees from top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
England captain Harry Kane won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or after defeating Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé. His victory made him the first English player to claim the award in 25 years.
Kane, who became the Premier League’s second-highest goalscorer, completed a memorable night in London after an impressive season.
