Miguel Cardoso Challenges Mamelodi Sundowns to Show Character After Champions League Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has challenged his players to demonstrate their character as the South African club looks to recover from its elimination from the CAF Champions League.

The Portuguese tactician made the remarks ahead of Sundowns’ Carling Knockout Round of 16 clash against Marumo Gallants on Tuesday evening, stressing the importance of responding positively to disappointment.

Cardoso acknowledged the expectations surrounding Sundowns, a club that has consistently targeted success in Africa’s premier club competition. He emphasised that the team’s reaction to the setback would be an important measure of its mentality and determination.

“This is the club that has proposed itself for many years to win the Champions League,” Cardoso said, underlining the ambition that has defined the Brazilians’ approach to continental football.

Sundowns have established themselves as one of South Africa’s leading football clubs, regularly competing for domestic honours while pursuing success on the African stage. Their ambitions in the CAF Champions League have made them a team expected to challenge for the title whenever they enter the competition.

However, their elimination represents a significant disappointment for a side that has invested considerable effort in maintaining its position among Africa’s top clubs.

Cardoso’s comments suggest that the focus has now shifted towards how the players respond to the disappointment rather than dwelling on the elimination. For a team with Sundowns’ ambitions, recovering quickly from setbacks is essential, particularly with other competitions still providing opportunities to secure silverware.

The upcoming encounter against Marumo Gallants offers Sundowns an immediate chance to redirect their attention towards domestic football. The Carling Knockout competition presents another opportunity for the club to compete for a trophy and restore confidence within the squad.

Gallants, meanwhile, will be looking to take advantage of the situation and produce a strong performance against one of the country’s most established teams. Facing Sundowns presents a difficult challenge, but the knockout format means that every opportunity must be taken.

For Cardoso and his players, Tuesday’s match carries importance beyond simply progressing to the next round. A convincing response could help rebuild momentum and demonstrate that the team remains focused despite its continental disappointment.

The Sundowns coach will therefore expect his players to approach the encounter with determination, discipline and a strong desire to win.
