“I Begged Him To Come Back” Kwanele Kopo Reveals The Real Reason Why Ronwen Almost Quit Football

Kwanele Kopo Reveals the Emotional Words That Changed Everything After Ronwen Williams Almost Quit Football After His Brother’s Death

The tragic loss of Ronwen Williams’ older brother, Marvin, nearly caused him to give up on football altogether. However, a heartfelt intervention by Ronwen’s former coach, Kwanele Kopo, helped turn around Williams’ career.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns custodian has gone on to become a legendary figure in South African football, captaining the national team and garnering accolades from across the world. However, a tragic backstory that almost ended his football career before it even started lies behind his accomplishments.

Kopo brought up the tough time again during his recent appearance on the Arena Sports Show, detailing his attempts to persuade the young custodian to play again after his sadness made him hesitant to do so.

Kopo recounts how the devastating news reached the SuperSport United youth squad as they were on route to Cape Town for the Bayhill Under-19 tournament.

As Kopo reflected on their journey to Cape Town for the Bayhill Tournament, he received the devastating news that his brother had died.

In order to be with his family, Williams went back to Gqeberha right away. The young footballer’s strong bond with his elder brother was profoundly affected by the death.

The club allowed Williams to take a break from football to grieve, according to Kopo, so he could come back when he was ready.

“We sent him to Gqeberha right away and gave him a month off, but he never returned,” the coach explained.

For those who had faith in Williams’ abilities, what came next was a trying time. The young goalkeeper’s grief extended well beyond the field of play, and he found it difficult to muster the emotional strength to return to training.

Instead of abandoning the gifted kid, Kopo persisted in trying to connect with him. In his quest to persuade Williams to rethink his choice, he also spoke with his mother, Hazel.

“I spoke to his mother and pleaded with him to return; I told him you’re destined to play for Bafana Bafana,” Kopo disclosed.

Ultimately, the coach was able to put Williams’ football passion into words, drawing a connection to his brother’s memories.

“I believe the deciding factor in his return was my insistence that he return in honour of his brother, who would never have approved of his decision to retire from football,” she said.

Williams was able to reevaluate his future after reading the message. After a while, he went back to SuperSport United, where he continued his growth and eventually made it to the first squad.

What followed was an outstanding career for Williams. After becoming South Africa’s premier custodian, he captained Bafana Bafana and played for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Notable among his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations exploits in early 2024 were his four penalty saves in the quarterfinal shoot-out against Cape Verde, which garnered him a great deal of attention.
