Ghanaians React As Chairman Wontumi Makes Some Demands In Prison
According to a report by GTV Ghana today being Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Ghanaian politician and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has called for reforms in the country’s prison system. Among his proposals are the establishment of a dedicated hospital for prisoners and the introduction of conjugal visits for inmates.
Chairman Wontumi believes that improving conditions in Ghanaian prisons should be an important part of efforts to strengthen the country’s correctional system. His proposals have drawn attention to issues surrounding the welfare of inmates and the need to review certain policies governing the country’s prisons.
One of the key issues raised in the proposal is the provision of a dedicated hospital to attend to the medical needs of prisoners. Access to proper healthcare remains an important consideration in correctional facilities, where inmates may require medical attention for various illnesses and other health conditions.
The proposed hospital could help improve access to treatment and ensure that prisoners receive appropriate medical care while serving their sentences, depending on how such a facility is planned and implemented.
Chairman Wontumi has also called for the introduction of conjugal visits, which would allow eligible inmates to spend private time with their spouses under established conditions. Supporters of such arrangements may argue that they could help prisoners maintain family relationships and prepare for reintegration into society after completing their sentences.
Beyond these proposals, the call for prison reforms raises broader questions about rehabilitation, security, healthcare and the treatment of inmates in Ghana.
However, implementing the suggested measures would require careful consideration by the relevant authorities, including the Ghana Prisons Service and other stakeholders. Issues such as funding, security arrangements, eligibility requirements and the practical management of prison facilities would need to be addressed.
The proposals have therefore brought renewed attention to discussions about how Ghana can improve its prison system while maintaining public safety and ensuring that inmates are treated humanely.
