FG Targets December 7 to Declare Nigeria Ebola-Free

According to a report by The Sun on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Federal Government has set December 7 as the target date to declare Nigeria free of Ebola, provided no new cases are recorded.

The declaration would follow the standard incubation period required by global health authorities before an outbreak can be officially declared over.

Nigeria’s health authorities have been on high alert since a confirmed case was detected, triggering contact tracing and heightened surveillance across the country.

The planned end-date announcement is intended to calm public anxiety while keeping response measures firmly in place until the danger has fully passed.

Health officials have repeatedly warned that premature relaxation of containment protocols could trigger a fresh spread of the virus.

The Coordinating Minister of Health has been leading the federal response, coordinating with state governments, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and international partners.

Isolation facilities and treatment centres are being prepared as part of the broader preparedness strategy announced in recent days.

The World Health Organization’s guidelines require a country to record zero new cases for a defined period before an Ebola-free declaration can be made.

Public health experts say Nigeria’s experience in containing previous outbreaks positions it well to meet the December target.

Until then, authorities say contact tracing, port surveillance and public awareness campaigns will continue at full intensity.
