FG approves โ‚ฆ70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers

The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of โ‚ฆ70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, to cushion the impact of rising living costs.

The decision was reached at a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, following renewed discussions on workersโ€™ welfare, the rising cost of living and outstanding agreements.

According to the memorandum of understanding signed at the meeting, the transport intervention will run for six months, starting in November.

The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears covering the period from May 1, 2026. The arrears will be paid in three equal monthly instalments, beginning in November.

However, both parties failed to agree on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage.

The memorandum stated that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted immediately and commence discussions, while noting that disagreement remained over the implementation date.

The NLC expressed concern about the Federal Governmentโ€™s handling of the issues raised during negotiations.

In response, the government reaffirmed its respect for the Congressโ€™s right to advocate for improved working conditions, stating that it was working to address the demands through structured interventions.
