The City of Cape Town will shut down its customer service centre in Nyanga at the end of October, forcing residents to use alternative offices or digital channels.

According to the City, the permanent closure is due to a sharp decline in foot traffic and persistent safety concerns driven by violence and unrest in the surrounding area.

Mayoral Committee Member for Finance Siseko Mbandezi said the Nyanga Revenue Cash Office had seen customer visits decrease over recent years, with some days recording zero visitors.

He noted that the drop in in-person transactions and receipts limited opportunities for meaningful customer engagement.

“Ongoing incidents of violence and unrest in the surrounding area have raised safety concerns for both staff and members of the public accessing the facility,” Mbandezi said, adding that the move directly addresses these operational and security challenges.

Residents requiring face-to-face assistance are urged to visit the Fezeka customer office, situated almost 3.6km away.

The City apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that the staff member based in Nyanga will be redeployed to Fezeka to assist visitors there.

Officials also encouraged residents to use the municipality’s online booking and payment portals to avoid travelling. Customers planning in-person visits should check operating hours on the City’s website or telephone in advance.
