Cement and Kenkey Price Brouhaha: Here Are the Current Prices Based on Ground Reports

Reports of a significant decline in cement prices across Ghana have been met with skepticism, as many consumers say prices in the market remain largely unchanged despite claims shared online.

According to some reports, GHACEM had lowered the price of its 42.5-grade cement from GH₵120 to GH₵82 in response to the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi.

However, checks conducted in Accra and other locations suggest that the alleged reductions have not yet become evident. GHACEM 42.5-grade cement continues to sell for between GH₵120 and GH₵135, while the 32-grade variety costs around GH₵110. Dangote cement is reportedly selling for approximately GH₵128.

In response to the claims, some consumers have shared receipts showing the prices they paid for cement. Nevertheless, many of these receipts are dated before the period when the reported reductions were expected to begin.

Retailers say they are still selling cement purchased at higher prices and cannot immediately reduce their selling prices. They expect any reductions to become noticeable once their existing stock has been exhausted and replaced with supplies bought at lower costs.

Meanwhile, a separate claim that the price of kenkey had dropped from GH₵5 to GH₵3 has also drawn criticism. Some vendors have rejected the claim, with one jokingly asking whether the local food was also affected by movements in the exchange rate.

The conflicting reports have raised questions about whether the price cuts are yet to take effect or whether the claims are simply misinformation circulating on social media.

For now, consumers remain cautious, insisting that the reported economic gains will only be convincing when they translate into lower prices in local markets.
