Brazilian presidential candidate ‘is banned from leaving the country’

Far-Right senator Flavio Bolsonaro claims he was ‘banned from leaving’ Brazil and ordered to hand over his passports just hours after losing the presidential election to Leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro said that police had stopped him in the street moments after he had visited his imprisoned father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The senator, who was defeated on Sunday by Lula in a runoff vote, said he intended to comply with the request, and denied he planned to flee the country after the election.

Bolsonaro also claimed that the request was based on a ruling from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw his father’s trial.

Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest after being found guilty in September last year of plotting a coup.

In a video posted to social media on Monday, the former president’s son revealed: ‘I was ordered right on the street to hand ‌over my passports, and I’m also prohibited from leaving the country.’

The defeated politician added that the move came after his younger brother Eduardo Bolsonaro – who is in self-imposed exile in the US – said on a podcast last week that Flavio should leave the country if he lost the runoff election to Lula.

However Bolsonaro said that he ‘never said that’ in relation to leaving Brazil in the event of a loss.

Lula won a historic fourth term in Sunday’s election in a surprise result that defied polls.

The Leftist leader won 51.7 per cent of the vote, compared to 48.2 per cent for Bolsonaro, official results showed.

But Mr Bolsonaro refused to accept defeat and said he would ask for the result to be annulled due to a Sunday ruling from a Supreme Court justice that extended voting for two hours.

Eighty-year-old Lula pulled off a dramatic turnaround after a shock second-place finish in the first round.

Mr Bolsonaro had won the election’s first round, and hoped to revive his father’s far-right movement and pardon him.

The result has put the brakes on a wave of Right-wing election victories across Latin America.

At times, Lula’s re-election looked like a long shot, as voters soured on him and his Workers’ Party after years of corruption scandals and rising prices, while sweeping societal changes left the former metalworker and union leader looking out of touch with an increasingly app-based economy and its growing ranks of informal workers.

Lula was jailed from 2018 to 2019 on corruption charges that were later overturned, paving the way for him to beat Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election.

His son had pledged to hand Brazil to ‘the Lord Jesus Christ’ and had vowed to crack down on crime and slash government spending if victorious.

Pollsters said better-than-expected turnout had powered Lula to victory.

He becomes the first candidate since Brazil’s return to democracy in the 1980s to be elected after finishing second in the first round.
