APC Leader Themba Godi Opens Door to Coalitions With Any Party Ahead of Local Government Elections

LOUIS TRICHARDT, LIMPOPO – African People’s Convention (APC) leader Themba Godi has declared that his party is willing to enter into coalition agreements with any political party that places service delivery at the centre of its priorities.

Godi made the remarks while addressing APC members and councillor candidates in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo, as the party intensifies its campaign ahead of South Africa’s local government elections scheduled for November 4, 2026.

His statement signals the APC’s willingness to work across political party lines, provided potential coalition partners demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of residents and ensuring that municipalities fulfil their responsibilities.

Local government coalitions have become an increasingly important feature of South African politics, with political parties often required to negotiate partnerships to govern municipalities where no single party secures an outright majority.

However, coalition arrangements can face challenges when parties disagree over leadership positions, policy priorities and the distribution of political power. Godi’s emphasis on service delivery suggests that the APC wants practical governance outcomes to guide its approach to potential partnerships.

For residents, effective municipal governance remains crucial to the provision of essential services, including reliable water and electricity, proper sanitation, road maintenance, refuse collection and accountable local leadership.

As the November 4 elections approach, the APC will be seeking support for its candidates while presenting its vision for local government.

Godi’s position leaves the door open to negotiations with parties of different political persuasions, but the central question will be whether prospective partners can translate their commitments into tangible improvements for communities.

The APC’s coalition stance places service delivery at the forefront of its political message, with the party signalling that cooperation should be judged by its impact on residents rather than party affiliation alone.

The coming elections will determine how much influence the APC can secure at municipal level and whether its proposed approach can translate into meaningful partnerships.
