Any Politician Who Is Coming To My Village To Paste Poster, They Will Beat The Politician Up — Maxwell Opara
Maxwell Opara, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has claimed that residents of some communities in his constituency have become so disillusioned with politicians that they threaten to beat anyone who visits their areas to paste campaign posters. He made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, October 26, 2026.
The interviewer asked Opara about the conversations he had been having with people in his constituency and others he encountered during his campaign, particularly their feelings about the administration and the level of economic hardship in the country.
In response, the NDC chieftain said he had been campaigning since August, when the ban on political campaigns was lifted, and had been visiting communities, including places where he grew up and attended school. “I can tell you, I’ve been campaigning since August, they lifted this ban. I’ve been meeting people because I grew up in my village. I attended primary school in my village. I attended secondary school in my village before I went to the university,” he said.
Opara explained that his familiarity with the area had enabled him to understand the difficulties confronting residents, particularly in communities where infrastructure and access to education had allegedly deteriorated. “If you go to my Facebook page, you will see a community I attended, no road, they are living in bush. The school, the primary school and the secondary school has been cut off from, the student doesn’t attend school again,” Opara said.
He added that residents of the community had expressed their unwillingness to welcome politicians, but made an exception for him because he had not previously held public office or contested for an elective position. “And they said that they don’t want to see a politician there. They allowed me to come to that place to campaign because I have not been in government and I have not vied for any position,” he stated.
Opara further claimed that the residents had issued warnings against politicians who might visit the area to put up campaign posters, describing the reaction as an indication of their frustration. “So what they are now talking about is that any politician who is coming there to paste poster, they will beat the politician up. Go there and verify,” he said.
The NDC chieftain identified the areas he was referring to as Omoku in Esiniste and other communities, urging people to visit and verify the conditions he had described. “Now, what am I telling them? I’m telling them that if I’m elected as somebody representing a house, this is a federal constituency, as a House member, I will make sure that any allocation sent to them must go to them,” he said.
